A free exhibition at the Lagos Cultural Centre, Hall 1, The Art of Maramgoni, features the works of Waldemar Maramgoní Júnior.
Born in São Paulo in 1972, the son of Waldemar Maramgoní and Maria Lúcia, Maramgoní Jnr. adopted the stage name Maramgoní. As a teenager, his teachers thought him lazy and disinterested in his studies. By the time he was diagnosed as dyslexic he was already an adult. Maramgoní intuitively found a way to express himself and the path was painting.
He liked and had a talent for drawing and painting so much so that he started teaching painting at the age of 15. He did not lack students either, earning enough to buy paint, brushes and canvases, to pay his bills and to help at home. The once troubled boy began to show a special talent as an artist.
Attracted by the concepts of light, shadow and dialogue between colours, the artist would soon be an adept of academicism since his first contact with painting. The artist never read about the academic concept of painting in order to understand perfectly what it was about, but regardless, he mastered the techniques of style through his eyes.
This exhibition aims to celebrate the artist’s 30-year career, taking us through a brief retrospective of his career through his artistic production. The show runs until 9 October.
