Adapted Surf Meeting

The 8th Adapted Surf Meeting at Praia da Rocha, aimed at young people with disabilities, will take place on July 26. The meeting aims to raise awareness that anyone can and should practice a variety of physical activities, regardless of their limitations.

This special meeting will take place in the Sports Area at Praia da Rocha, where registered participants will have the opportunity to try surfing starting at 10:00 a.m. Registration is free and open to entities from Portimão and neighbouring municipalities.

The objectives of the event are to promote the practice of adapted sports, their benefits, and their integrative capacity, especially at a social level. The event aims to create sporting habits in participants and stimulate them to actively contribute to building a model that finds answers in society for the integration of people with disabilities.

Municipal Sporting Event of the Year

This surf meeting was distinguished last February as the Municipal Sporting Event of the Year. It won in the category of municipalities with more than 50,000 and less than 100,000 inhabitants during the seminar “Management of Sporting Events in a Municipal Context,” held in Mealhada. The Municipality of Portimão organizes this meeting, combining local efforts to promote the sport of surfing among its participants with the collaboration of Portimão Surf Club, PlaySurf/Portimão Marina Yacht Club, and Future Eco Surf School/Portimão Naval Club.

Adapted sports have been gaining more athletes and fans throughout the country, thanks to the persistence of the Portuguese Sports Federation for the disabled, as well as the numerous associations that fight for equal rights and access to various areas of society. This action represents another sign that people with disabilities are not different from anyone else and should engage in various physical activities, especially to stimulate physical and mental health, quality of life, and self-esteem.
