A Breath of Fresh Air: Exploring the Algarve’s Fantastic New Green Space
If you are looking for a lovely new spot to enjoy the lovely spring weather with family and friends, we have some brilliant news for you. A massive new green space has just opened its doors in our beautiful region, and it is definitely worth adding to your weekend itinerary.
On Saturday, 21 March, the brand new Parque Urbano do Parchal was officially inaugurated. Located in the Lagoa municipality, this is the area’s first urban park and represents a wonderful asset for the local community.

A Grand Community Opening
The park was unveiled in a lively ceremony that drew hundreds of residents and a host of local dignitaries. Luís António da Encarnação, the President of the Lagoa City Council, delivered a speech emphasising that the park is the first step in a clear strategy to create more green spaces and promote a high quality of life within the municipality. He was joined by José Apolinário, President of the CCDR Algarve, as well as members of the Municipal Executive and representatives from local security and emergency services, including the GNR and the Lagoa Volunteer Firefighters.
It was a true community celebration, featuring active participation from numerous local institutions, including the local scout group (Corpo Nacional de Escutas do Parchal), the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Estômbar, Che Lagoense, Associação Académica Bela Vista, Sociedade Recreativa Ferragudense, and Associação Barracão de Xangô. The crowd was even treated to entertainment from the martial arts group Capoeiragem Malta do Sul!

What to Expect
The park is incredibly spacious, boasting a total area of 33,000 square metres, which is roughly the size of three football pitches. Whether you are looking to keep fit, entertain the little ones, or simply have a relaxed afternoon out, the park has been designed to cater to everyone. It features a dedicated outdoor workout area, play equipment for children, and even specialised geriatric equipment for seniors. For those who prefer to sit back and socialise, there is a lovely leisure zone complete with a bar, making it a perfect spot for a family get-together.

A Green and Sustainable Oasis
One of the most impressive aspects of the Parque Urbano do Parchal is its strong commitment to the environment. The space has been transformed with the planting of 525 trees and over 14,000 shrubs. The project deliberately favoured Mediterranean species that are perfectly adapted to our local Algarve climate and require very little water. Furthermore, the park utilises a highly efficient smart drip-irrigation system, permeable paving, and is prepared for water reuse, showcasing a brilliant step towards local sustainability. The entire project represents a €2.8 million investment, supported by the Portugal 2030 funding programme.

Opening Hours
The park is open to the public every single day of the week. The opening hours are wonderfully generous, allowing you to enjoy early morning jogs or late evening strolls:
- Summer: 07:00 to 00:00 (Midnight)
- Winter: 07:00 to 23:00
So, grab your trainers, pack a picnic, and enjoy this brilliant new community space!
