Uncorking Portimão: The Rise of an Algarve Wine Tourism Destination
Portimão is quickly becoming known for more than just its stunning beaches; it is successfully solidifying its reputation as a premier wine-producing territory and wine tourism destination. By joining forces with neighbouring municipalities—including Lagoa, Albufeira, Monchique, São Brás de Alportel, and Lagos—Portimão has become a key player in the growing “Algarve Golden Terroir” (AGT) brand.
This collaborative strategy aims to promote the region’s rich viticulture and position the Algarve as a top-tier destination for wine lovers. As part of this major push, Portimão recently showcased its offerings at the FINE International Wine Tourism Exhibition in Valladolid, Spain. Capitalising on that momentum, the city is set to host an exclusive Familiarisation (FAM) Trip on March 9th.

The upcoming FAM trip will bring 12 international buyers from Mexico, Brazil, Norway, the United States, Spain, and Portugal right to Portimão’s doorstep. These industry experts will get a firsthand look at how the city beautifully blends world-class wine with unforgettable local tourism experiences. The itinerary promises a true taste of the region, featuring visits to the picturesque Adega da Villa Alvor, a thrilling stop at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, and dining experiences at some of Portimão’s most renowned restaurants.
Supported by the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) and the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA), the Algarve Golden Terroir initiative is creating powerful synergies between the wine and tourism sectors. The ultimate goal is to use wine production and tourism as a catalyst to attract visitors year-round, proving that the Algarve is a destination for prestigious and authentic experiences well beyond the summer months.
Ultimately, this push for wine tourism is about more than just boosting the local economy and regional development. Wine is a profound reflection of Portimão’s local identity, culture, and historic traditions. Whether you are a local resident or a visiting tourist, Portimão’s expanding wine scene offers a deeply authentic, unique taste of the Algarve.
