Portimão and Territory – Portrait of 100 years of evolution of land occupation and use.
An academic and scientific project is underway that traces 100 years of the evolution of land use and occupation in Portimão. The study is a result of a partnership between the Municipality of Portimão and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Social Sciences of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CICS.NOVA).
This publicly funded municipal mapping project analyses multi-temporal geographic data observed between 1947 and 2021, with simulated projections for the year 2047. The scientific curator is Raquel Faria de Deus, a researcher at CICS.NOVA and José António Tenedório, a professor at NOVA FCSH.
The results will be presented next October at the exhibition “Portimão e Território – Retrato de 100 anos de evolução da ocupação e uso do solo” (Portimão and Territory – Portrait of 100 years of land use and occupation) which is scheduled to open on the 11 October 2025 in the old Lota building, as part of the city’s centenary program.
The exhibition will feature a series of land use and occupation maps from the period in question, produced by researcher Raquel de Deus, illustrating the main transformations that occurred over 100 years in the municipality, with a projection of the historical urban processes that largely explain these changes.
On the same date, a round table will be held on the theme of “Land use transformation, Resilience and Territorial Sustainability” with the participation of experts in the field, who will discuss the challenges and opportunities for the future of the municipality in this area.
