Portimão Hosts National Rescue Championships: A Thrilling Display of Skill and Bravery
Here at Tomorrow magazine, we are dedicated to sharing the news and stories that shape our local Algarve community. This weekend, Portimão is at the centre of national attention as it hosts the National Championships for Rope Rescue, Extrication, and Trauma.
Starting today, Thursday the 21st of May, the Portimão Arena and the outdoor area of the Fairs and Exhibitions Park will transform into a high-stakes testing ground for firefighters and Portuguese Red Cross teams from across the country. The event will bring together approximately 300 rescue professionals from mainland Portugal, Madeira, and the Azores. We are especially proud to cheer on our local heroes, with participating teams hailing from Portimão, Albufeira, Loulé, Olhão, and Tavira.
The championships will see 27 teams competing in Trauma, 19 in Extrication, and 7 in Rope Rescue. Evaluated by national and international judges, these teams will race against the clock to resolve simulated traffic accidents and trauma scenarios. It is a rigorous test of their command, pre-hospital care, and technical response skills. Furthermore, the stakes are incredibly high: the top-performing teams will earn the honour of representing Portugal at the upcoming World Rescue Challenge in Brazil.

The public is warmly invited to watch the action unfold for free between Friday, the 22nd, and Sunday, the 24th of May. Organisers hope the open-door policy will allow the local community to witness the remarkable skills of the first responders who protect us daily, whilst also creating a collaborative space for learning and knowledge-sharing amongst the professionals themselves.
The official opening ceremony takes place tonight at 9 pm at the Portimão Arena, featuring a performance by the Rancho Folclórico da Ladeira do Vau and concluding with the Portimão Firefighters’ Fanfare. The intense weekend of competition will then close with a medal and prize ceremony on Sunday at 6 pm Both ceremonies are free for the public to attend.
In a wonderful display of community spirit, an international seminar was also held this afternoon, with the €5 registration fee being donated to the Portuguese Association for Developmental Disorders and Autism.
This fantastic event is promoted by the National Association of Rescue and Extrication (ANSD) in partnership with the Portimão Municipality’s Civil Protection service and the Portimão Firefighters. Notably, the Portimão Firefighters are also celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, making this weekend’s events even more momentous.
