A Shared History

Lagos and Alcácer Quibir Reconnect: A Legacy of Transcontinental Friendship

Here in the Algarve, our local history is deeply intertwined with that of our transcontinental neighbours. Recently, this historical bond was celebrated as Lagos welcomed a delegation from the Moroccan municipality of Ksar El Kebir (also known as Alcácer Quibir) to reawaken the ties of friendship between our two communities.

Led by Mohamed Simou, the President of the Ksar El Kebir Municipal Council, the Moroccan delegation’s visit marked a beautiful evolution of our shared past. Centuries ago, the 1578 Battle of Alcácer Quibir was a deadly and tragic event for both sides, famously resulting in the death of King D. Sebastião of Portugal. Today, however, that history has blossomed into a formal twinning agreement—a powerful testament to how historical conflict can transform into modern friendship, which is especially valuable in today’s tense international climate.

The official visit featured a solemn session at the Paços do Concelho Séc. XXI, beautifully blending our cultures with Portuguese Fado performed by Helena Candeias and Moroccan music sung by Rachid Bouasria. Lagos’ Mayor, Hugo Pereira, reflected on the foundational visits that established this twinning agreement between 2018 and 2019, which included the inauguration of ‘Avenida Lagos’ in Morocco.

Reciprocating this honour, the recent visit concluded with the unveiling of the ‘Avenida de Alcácer Quibir’ signpost in Lagos, alongside a stunning new abstract sculpture by artist Pedro Correia. The marble and limestone monument symbolises the two armies that once clashed, and the two cities that now stand united in mutual respect for their cultural differences.

The connection between the municipalities goes far beyond formal ceremonies. Frederico Mendes Paula, a key driver of this collaborative initiative, highlighted ongoing projects such as the creation of an Interpretation Centre in Alcácer Quibir, located where King D. Sebastião was initially buried for four months. President Simou noted that this Moroccan site already hosts an exhibition dedicated to the Portuguese cultural heritage in the region.

This visit also underscored practical future collaborations and mutual support. Simou expressed deep gratitude for the municipality of Lagos’ solidarity during the recent devastating floods in the Larache province, which forced the evacuation of around 85% of Ksar El Kebir’s population. Looking ahead, officials discussed a range of exciting future prospects:

  • Tourism and Economic Exchange: Fostering practical results for the local economy and facilitating youth student exchanges.
  • International Partnerships: Celebrating the joint Portugal-Spain-Morocco bid for the 2030 Football World Cup and Portugal’s role as a guest of honour at the 2026 International Agriculture Exhibition in Meknes.
  • Maritime Connectivity: Pushing for the realisation of a regular maritime link between Tangier and the Algarve via Portimão.
