On Monday, July, Álvaro Miguel Bila became the Mayor of Portimão. His selection was the result of the previous mayor, Isilda Gomes, resigning from the post due to her election as a member of the European Parliament.
Álvaro Bila says he is taking on this new responsibility “with redoubled energy, commitment and willingness to work for the interests of Portimão, the people of Portimão and portimonenses”. He went on to say he felt “an enormous sense of responsibility, for succeeding a President who left an indelible legacy in the recovery from a deep institutional and financial crisis”, to regain “the stability, trust and credibility, for which we are recognised.”
The Mayor guarantees that he is “aware of the importance of meeting the wishes of the people of
Portimão for a more inclusive, environmentally friendly, safer city, with better accessibility and efficient mobility, more housing, more health and better education, more leisure and recreational spaces designed for social interaction and, above all, better public services for urban cleaning, maintenance of green spaces and public facilities.
“Having resolved the constraints that conditioned municipal activity, with new leadership and a renewed team, the time has come to renew our commitments to Portimão and the people of Portimão, to open up new horizons in an open, participatory, decentralized governance model, close to the citizens, because a secular city is built with everyone,” defends the Mayor, while reaffirming, “with emotion, the pride I feel in being from Portimão and my determination to serve to build a better future.”
Also, from this date, Eduardo José Silva Estevão Catarino joins the municipal executive. He was responsible for the Delta Group in the Algarve for many years until his retirement. Catarino joins current councillors Teresa Mendes, who assumes the vice-presidency, José Cardoso, and Sandra Pereira, who joined the government following the recent resignation of former councillor João Gamboa due to personal reasons.
