History to Hi-Tech

Portimão’s Historic High Street Gets a Digital Makeover

Portimão is taking a bold step into the future with the launch of its new ‘Digital Commercial District’ (Bairro Comercial Digital), an ambitious project designed to breathe new life into the city’s historic and commercial centre. Officially launched on the 16th of March under the brand Comércio do Centro Portimão, this initiative aims to seamlessly blend the charm of traditional local commerce with the convenience of modern technology.

A High-Tech High Street

The core of the project involves the digitalisation of approximately 150 local businesses situated in the heart of Portimão. The new digital district provides local merchants with a comprehensive suite of free digital tools, including a dedicated marketplace featuring online shops, advanced booking systems, and integrated order and delivery services.

For shoppers and tourists, navigating the city centre will soon be easier than ever thanks to a brand-new website and mobile app. Furthermore, the initiative promises to enrich the visitor experience by offering interactive augmented reality features at various historical and cultural sites throughout the city.

Revitalising Local Commerce

The project’s launch event saw a strong turnout from the local business community and was attended by key municipal figures, including Mayor Álvaro Bila and the project’s manager, José Quintas, who outlined the district’s vision. Vice-Mayor Sandra Pereira also took to the stage to emphasise the critical importance of revitalising local commerce through such an innovative technological project.

Ultimately, the overarching goal of the Comércio do Centro Portimão brand is to encourage both locals and visitors to truly enjoy the city centre, guided by the project’s inviting motto: “where everything is on the way” (onde tudo fica de caminho).

Empowering Local Merchants

The digital transformation is already in full swing. Ricardo Villares, representing the e-commerce platform Mygon, introduced the specific tools available to businesses during the launch, which was followed by an active networking session. To ensure a smooth transition, a dedicated team is currently on the ground providing face-to-face onboarding for merchants eager to join the new marketplace.

Over the coming weeks, the enrolment period will remain open, with business owners receiving ongoing training and dedicated support from the Algarve Business Association (AEA) and the project management team.

This ambitious digital leap is promoted by the Municipality of Portimão in collaboration with several regional commerce and tourism associations, including ACRAL, APCS, and ATP, as well as the city’s Museums and Heritage Division. By embracing the digital age, Portimão is ensuring that its historic commercial centre remains a vibrant, accessible, and thriving hub for years to come.
