Free Public Transport as Lagos Marks European Mobility Week

Lagos is encouraging residents and visitors to leave the car behind during European Mobility Week, from 16 to 22 September, with free public transport, cycling, walking and activities taking place across the municipality.

One of the main initiatives will be free travel on all A ONDA municipal buses throughout the week. The network currently operates 10 routes serving the municipality’s parishes, towns and villages. Information sessions will also be held for younger students and their families to encourage the use of public transport for journeys between home and school.

The programme includes a regional night walk on 18 September, with three routes designed for different levels of mobility, followed on 19 September by a guided walk exploring how Lagos’s urban spaces have adapted to changing transport needs.

The week culminates on 22 September, European Car Free Day, when part of Avenida dos Descobrimentos will close to traffic between 9am and 5pm. The space will instead host sports and leisure activities, health screenings and cycling.

Activities will extend beyond Lagos to Barão de São João, Bensafrim, Luz and Odiáxere, with cycling, heritage walks, equestrian activities, functional training and Zumba among the events planned.

Lagos has participated in European Mobility Week since 2002. This year’s theme, “Mobility for Everyone – Intergenerational Justice,” focuses on making sustainable and accessible transport part of a healthier and fairer future for all generations.
