Vila do Bispo at the Arribada Festival in Spain

At the invitation of the municipality of Baiona, Vila do Bispo was represented at the event by the deputy mayor, Dora Guerreiro, who was accompanied by the president of the Municipal Assembly, Luciano Rafael, the councillors Dino Lourenço, Luís Paixão and Paula Freitas, the presidents of the parish councils of Barão de São Miguel and Vila do Bispo and Raposeira, Alberto Encarnação and Marisa Dias, respectively, and the secretary of the Sagres parish council, Igor Simão.

The municipality’s representatives took part in various solemn commemorative events, including a mass in the Church of Santa María and the laying of a wreath; the inauguration of the exhibition ‘El carro Galego y su heuchera’ (The Galician Car and Its Chassis); the commemoration of the 532nd anniversary of the Festa da Arribada; and the Great Medieval Parade.

Participation in this initiative, which commemorates the arrival of the caravel Pinta and the landing of Martín Alonso Pinzón in Baiona, with the good news of America and the New World, is classified as being of International Tourist Interest. It is part of the twinning agreement signed between Vila do Bispo and Baiona on 6 March 2009.

It should be remembered that the twinning agreement is based on the importance of the historical ties related to the epic of the Discoveries, carried out by the Portuguese and Spanish peoples, as well as the strong friendship and intense Galician-Portuguese cultural ties. Animated by common desires for peace, friendship and prosperity, the two municipalities pledged, under the title of ‘brother peoples’, to strengthen their relations and co-operate for the cultural and material development of the two territories.

In addition to participating in the ceremonial ceremonies, the municipality of Vila Bispense had a stand in the promotion area of the Royal Medieval Market of La Arribada, where it publicised a differentiated package of tourist potential, full of natural and cultural singularities that exist in the municipality’s landscapes.
