Remembering Bonnie Tyler

Straight from the Heart and the Algarve

It is with profound sadness that Tomorrow magazine informs our readers of the passing of the legendary Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler at the age of 75. She passed away unexpectedly following complications from emergency intestinal surgery at a hospital in Faro, Portugal.

While Bonnie achieved global mega-stardom and proudly considered Wales her home, her connection to Portugal—and our local community—was incredibly special. She and her husband, Robert, first visited the Algarve in the mid-1970s and instantly fell in love, famously describing it as “a magical place”. They purchased a house near Albufeira during that era, which they held onto over the decades, eventually transforming it into a modern, state-of-the-art property through major renovations. Her love for the area even extended to her music career, as she recorded one of her albums right here in the Algarve.

Her dedication to our region went well beyond just residing here. Bonnie was a proud patron of the Guia-based AAG (Animal Charity Foundation), actively supporting their mission to help injured, hungry, and distressed street animals in the local community.

Our own writer, Vaughan Willmore, had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Bonnie twice—first in August 2021, and most recently for our August 2023 feature, Straight from the Heart. During these meetings, Vaughan was struck by her “generosity of spirit,” recalling how she always arrived early with “no airs and graces”. Despite a career spanning nearly 50 years, she always maintained a friendly and humble approach.

Bonnie’s journey from growing up in a four-bedroom council house in Wales to topping charts around the world was truly inspiring. When reflecting on being made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2023, she humbly shared with Vaughan: “My receiving an MBE proves anyone from any background can become a success”.

We will remember her not just for history-making power ballads like Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero, but for her vibrant and entertaining spirit. As she enthusiastically told Tomorrow readers during her final interview with us: “Come to a show! I might be seventy-two, but I still know how to rock!”.

She certainly did. She will be greatly missed by the Algarve community and her millions of fans worldwide.
