AMATEUR thespians and singers raised €1,800 euro for charity from their last pantomime at Burgau Sports Centre – and are hoping to top this figure with their Christmas pantomime.
Written by retired journalist Martyn Torr, who lives in Burgau, the show was a continuation of the story of Randy’s Rock Bar, the first instalment taking place in 2021 after several COVID delays.
The cast decided to donate the proceeds to Caslas in Lagos. Thanks to a discount from the organisers, the funds enabled six young people to attend a summer camp in Val da Lama.
Speaking for Caslas, Jeannette Griffin told Tomorrow Magazine: “This was a happy, healthy break, and it meant the youngsters were not stuck in the institution for the exceedingly long school holidays.”
All the youngsters were given a thermal flask, too, so that disposable plastic bottles were not required.
Some of the money was also used to help a young man from Cape Verde take his driving test. “The youngster, who made a contribution by earning money working in a kitchen, now has a driving licence and is able to look for a job”, says Jeannette.
She added: “The balance from the Burgau show provided treats – the cinema, zip wire, Slide and Splash, bowling and crazy golf – for the youngsters who would otherwise not have had these opportunies.”
Rehearsals are in full swing for a third production, again at Burgau Sports Centre. Performances are on Friday, 29 November and Saturday, 30 November.
This is a Christmas show, again involving characters from Randy’s Rock Bar, with all the performers and singers from Lagos, Praia do Luz, Burgau and Salema.
Tickets are available from the sports centre at €10 or by calling +351 282 697 350.
