The Municipality of Monchique has concluded an important operation to regularise the toponymy in the municipality. The process resulted in the assignment of 48 new place names. The intervention resolved a problem that had dragged on for several years in the village of Marmelete and the town of Monchique.
The lack of street names and gaps in door numbering caused serious constraints in the daily lives of citizens. The main difficulties experienced were centred on the validation of addresses, delays in postal delivery, and the identification of homes during emergency response situations. To address this reality, the Executive resulting from the 2021 local elections created the specific portfolio of “Toponymy and cultural heritage”. The work was conducted by the Municipal Toponymy Commission in close coordination with the Parish Councils.
With the street map defined, the municipality is now moving on to the next phase of the project. The work focuses on correcting and assigning new door numbers. The issuance of public notices for each street with the door numbering scheme and official communication to the competent authorities are currently underway. In smaller rural settlements, the Parish Councils will install independent mailboxes to ensure correct postal distribution.
