Celebrating the Art of Narrative: The 14th “Momentos de Leitura” Competition
As your community magazine, deeply rooted in the Algarve, Tomorrow is thrilled to highlight a wonderful educational initiative that brings together the youth of our local municipalities. On the morning of May 9th, the 14th edition of the “Momentos de Leitura” (Moments of Reading) aloud reading competition will reach its grand finale.
This inspiring event will take place in the auditorium of the Portimão Museum. Promoted jointly by the school and municipal libraries of Portimão and Monchique, this year’s competition is entirely dedicated to the theme of the “Narrative Text”.
The Journey to the Finals
The competition has been a long and rewarding journey for local students, spanning three distinct stages. The first phase wrapped up in late January with class-level selections, followed by the school-grouping phase, which concluded in March. Now, 27 talented student finalists representing all four education levels from both participating municipalities will take the stage for the municipal finale. During this final round, participants will present a narrative text specifically selected for their educational cycle by the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Library.

Celebrating Language and Expression
Beyond just a competition, the initiative aims to promote daily reading habits, develop students’ oral comprehension and expression, and foster a stronger relationship between local schools and our community’s libraries. It also serves as a fitting tribute to World Portuguese Language Day, celebrated globally on 5 May.
As the finalists read aloud, a panel of evaluating teachers will be listening closely. Students will be judged on key performance criteria, including reading fluency, respect for punctuation and intonation, diction, rhythm, and overall expressiveness.
Rewarding Local Talent
Hard work and dedication to the written word deserve to be rewarded! All participants will receive prizes to encourage their continued love for reading. The Municipality of Portimão is awarding “Cartões Dá” gift cards to its finalists, valid at over 1,100 stores, with values of €125 for 1st place, €100 for 2nd place, €75 for 3rd place, and €25 for all other participants. Additionally, the Municipality of Monchique is offering €30 Bertrand bookstore gift cards to all of its participating students.
Join us in celebrating these bright young readers as they bring stories to life!
