Meet the New President of Portugal

Meet Portugal’s New President: António José Seguro

If you have been following the local news lately, you know that Portugal has entered a new political chapter. On 9 March, António José Seguro was officially sworn in as the 21st President of the Portuguese Republic. Here is everything you need to know about our new head of state and his historic path to the presidency.

A Record-Breaking Election

On 8 February 8, António José Seguro achieved a monumental milestone in Portuguese democratic history. He won the presidential election with an overwhelming 66.84% of the ballots cast, representing 3,502,613 votes. This sweeping victory represents the highest vote total ever obtained by a candidate in a Portuguese presidential election.

Who is António José Seguro?

Born on 11 March, 1962, in the town of Penamacor, Seguro credits his hometown with instilling in him the core values of community, solidarity, and hard work. Today, he lives in Caldas da Rainha with his wife of 25 years, Maria Margarida, and their two children.

Before taking on the highest office in the land, Seguro built a highly academic background, holding a degree in International Relations and a master’s in Political Science. He spent nearly two decades teaching these subjects at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and the University of Lisbon, focusing his academic work on democratic quality and ethics in public life.

A Career in Public Service—and a Decade Away

Seguro’s political journey began in his youth, and he officially joined the Socialist Party (Partido Socialista) in 1981. He climbed the ranks to hold several senior positions, eventually serving as the secretary-general of the Socialist Party and a Member of the European Parliament. He is widely recognised for his advocacy of democratic dialogue, notably spearheading a major parliamentary reform in 2007 that improved government transparency.

Interestingly, Seguro was not a career politician until his election. Between 2016 and 2026, he completely stepped away from frontline politics. During this ten-year hiatus, he shifted his focus to business, investing in agricultural and tourism projects in his home region.

A Global Inauguration

The new president officially took the oath of office, holding the Portuguese Constitution in his right hand, at the Assembleia da República, a ceremony marked by the national anthem and a traditional 21-gun salute. Highlighting Portugal’s strong international ties, the inauguration was attended by several foreign dignitaries, including King Felipe VI of Spain, alongside the presidents of Angola, Cabo Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Timor-Leste, and Mozambique.

For expats living here in the Algarve, Seguro brings an integrated vision for Portugal’s future. As he begins his mandate, his track record suggests a continued emphasis on pro-European integration, economic growth, social justice, and environmental sustainability.
