Lagos Celebrates Nature: “Protecting a Tree is Protecting Life”
The municipality of Lagos is springing into action this March, uniting schools and the local community in a special environmental campaign. Marking both World Tree Day on March 21 and World Water Day on 22 March, the city has launched a series of events under the inspiring motto, “Protecting a Tree is Protecting Life”.
The campaign, which runs until the end of the month, aims to raise awareness about ecosystem recovery and the sustainability of our precious water resources. It is a massive collaborative effort supported by local parishes, the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos (CCVL), Santa Casa da Misericórdia, the A Rocha association, and the League for the Protection of Nature (LPN).
Kicking Off the Celebrations
The initiative officially begins on 20 March at 10 am with an opening session at Parque da Cidade, bringing together municipal officials, residents and students from EB1 Santa Maria, and the CCVL. During the dedicated “Water Week,” local schools will dive into water conservation through interactive activities such as “Expedition H2O: Discovering the Value of Water” and “Mission Water: Guardians of the Drop”.
Going Green
From 20 – 27 March, Lagos will host “Green Week,” where the school community will take an active role in planting native tree species across various locations in the municipality. The week is packed with educational programs, including “The Superpowers of the Forest” at Parque da Cidade and “Forest in Equilibrium”. Students and participants will also enjoy environmental literacy visits to the Bravura Dam and the beautiful Barão de São João National Forest.
How the Community Can Get Involved
The municipality is encouraging everyone to participate in the green movement! Residents who visit the City Hall or local parish council offices during Green Week will receive a special eco-friendly gift designed to encourage environmental awareness.
Additionally, if you are in town between 21 and 31 March, be sure to stop by the Santo Amaro Market. There, you can view an inspiring exhibition of environmental projects and good practices created by the residents of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia care homes.
