Discover the Heart of the Algarve

Lagos Is Not Just Beaches documentary series announcement

When you think of Lagos, what comes to mind? For many of us living in or visiting the Algarve, the immediate answer is the stunning coastline and sun-soaked days. But a beautiful new audiovisual project is here to remind us that there is so much more to the city than its golden sands.

Aptly titled Lagos não é só praia (Lagos is not just beaches), this new documentary series aims to showcase the rich cultural, historical, and human heritage that shapes the municipality’s true identity.

Preserving Local Memories and Traditions

Supported by the Lagos Municipality through their Cultural Activity Support Program, this original creation by local filmmaker Ânia Bento dives deep into the heart of the region. The ambitious project comprises 29 episodes focused entirely on Lagos’s intangible heritage.

Instead of typical tourist hotspots, the series turns its lens toward the local community, seeking to preserve and highlight the memories, knowledge, traditional crafts, and personal testimonies of the people who call Lagos home. For expats and locals alike, this is a wonderful opportunity to discover the municipality’s many realities, from popular traditions to intimate life stories.

Spotlight on Meia Praia’s Popular Marches

Just in time for the lively Popular Saints festivities, the premiere episode is dedicated to the Marcha Popular da Meia Praia (Meia Praia Popular March).

Titled ‘Meia Praia entre marchas e tradições’ (Meia Praia between marches and traditions), this debut episode beautifully follows the community’s dedicated preparations for the annual celebrations. It evokes the traditional art of sewing and honours the strength and resilience of the women raised by the sea. More than just a celebration, the episode highlights the profound values of mutual help, family spirit, and a deep sense of belonging that characterise these historic popular marches.

Where to Watch the Series

Whether you are deeply rooted in the Algarve community or just starting to explore the local culture, this series offers an authentic window into the region beyond its well-known tourist attractions.

Episodes of Lagos não é só praia will be released weekly throughout the year. You can watch the first episode and follow the rest of the series by visiting the Municipality of Lagos’s official Facebook or Instagram pages.
