Bringing Colour to the Garden: A Beautiful Intergenerational Community Art Project

If you happen to be strolling through the Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, you will undoubtedly notice a vibrant array of new colours breathing life into the public space. This beautiful transformation is the result of “Dar Cor ao Jardim” (Give Colour to the Garden), a heartwarming community art collaboration recently unveiled in our area.

At Tomorrow Magazine, we love sharing stories about the people and places that make the Algarve community so special. This inspiring initiative perfectly captures that spirit, bringing together around 50 participants with remarkably diverse ages, ranging from just 5 to 95 years old. Over the past few months, these residents have engaged in various creative and manual activities—including DIY, crochet, and painting—to craft the stunning pieces now on display.

The project was spearheaded by the Community Centres of the municipal neighbourhoods of Pontal, Coca Maravilhas, and Cruz da Parteira, working in close collaboration with the Senior Centres of Portimão and Aldeia das Sobreiras.

However, “Dar Cor ao Jardim” is about much more than just a brilliant aesthetic upgrade. It is a deeply intergenerational endeavour designed to showcase local community talents, encourage the sharing of skills between different age groups, and combat social isolation. By fostering a positive environment and boosting participants’ self-esteem, the project highlights the vital role that local community and senior centres play as municipal facilities that promote social inclusion and improve residents’ quality of life.

These wonderful creations will remain on display in the Jardim Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles until the end of May. We highly encourage you to visit the garden to appreciate this true example of active citizenship and community pride. It is a wonderful reminder of how art can bring neighbours together, value our shared spaces, and create a strong sense of belonging.
