Portuguese Bombeiros Answer the Call in Spain
Recent weeks have seen devastating wildfires sweeping across our neighbours in Spain and France, triggering some of the largest evacuation operations in Europe and displacing over 267,000 people. In a true display of cross-border solidarity, Portugal has stepped up to help combat these fierce blazes.
Under the bilateral agreement between the two nations, Portugal dispatched a Joint Operational Force (FOCON) comprising 128 brave personnel to assist in the Ávila and Madrid regions. This dedicated team includes members of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), the Special Civil Protection Force (FEPC), the GNR, and volunteer firefighters from the Beiras and Serra da Estrela sub-region. Commander David Lobato, who is leading the Portuguese contingent, reported that our bombeiros have been working “non-stop” in incredibly challenging and volatile conditions to protect people, homes, and the environment.
This heroic deployment reminds us of the relentless dedication of our local fire brigades right here in the Algarve. At Tomorrow magazine, we have long been proud supporters of our local bombeiros, and we are continually in awe of their bravery.
We were recently incredibly humbled to attend the 139th-anniversary ceremony of the Lagos Bombeiros, where Tomorrow magazine was presented with a special award. This honour recognised our ongoing support through the Tomorrow Algarve Charity Trust (TACT) and the numerous articles we have published over the years highlighting their invaluable work. You can read more about this wonderful evening in our article, Tomorrow Magazine Honoured at Bombeiros’ 139th Anniversary Ceremony.

We also invite you to look back at our coverage of their previous milestone in Fighting Fires, which detailed the 138th anniversary of the Lagos Fire Brigade and highlighted how community donations, including a €2,500 contribution from TACT, help fund essential life-saving equipment.
As we continue to shine a spotlight on these everyday heroes, be sure to pick up our upcoming August issue! Sophie Sadler has penned a special report delving into the lives, challenges, and incredible work of the volunteer firefighters in Aljezur.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the bombeiros—whether they are keeping our local Algarve parishes safe or battling the fierce blazes across the border in Spain. Thank you for your service!
