A New Chapter for Barão de São João – The Local Reading Hub Reopens in a Renovated Space!
This week, there is good news for book lovers and culture enthusiasts in the Lagos municipality: the Barão de São João Reading Hub (Polo de Leitura) is reopening its doors in a beautifully renovated new location!
As part of an ongoing mission by the Lagos Municipal Library (Júlio Dantas) to decentralise culture and ensure everyone has access to literature and the arts, the Barão de São João hub has been relocated to the spacious and updated Edifício a Paragem, right in the heart of the village.
What to Expect at the New Space
Opening to the public this Friday, 17 April, the reading hub is so much more than just a place to borrow books. It has been designed as a true multipurpose community centre. Visitors can enjoy:
- Books for on-site reading and home borrowing
- Computers with internet access and free Wi-Fi
- Daily newspapers
- A welcoming space for local cultural events and traditions, complementing the existing “Barão Convida” program
Opening Day Festivities (Friday, 17 April)
To celebrate this new chapter, the municipality and the Parish Council have prepared a fantastic lineup of free events for the opening day:
- 10:30 am – 12:00 pm: The official inauguration session, themed “Environment, Arts, and Traditions.” It will feature a celebration of local identity, with the presentation of the Coletânea de Poesia Popular (Collection of Popular Poetry) by local poet Rosa Roxo.
- 3 pm: Take the kids to “Dança-te Famílias: Um Presente Especial.” Hosted by Vanessa Alexandra and Jean Jacques, this is a sensory and participatory experience blending music, movement, and group dynamics designed to explore family bonds and imagination.
Looking Ahead: Workshops and More!
The excitement doesn’t end on opening day. Running through to the end of July, the Barão de São João hub will host its first cycle of practical workshops focused on traditional manual skills, cultural knowledge, and community storytelling sessions.
This initiative is part of a wider network of community hubs opening their doors to more dynamic local activities, with sister reading hubs also operating in Odiáxere, Bensafrim, and Luz.
