Stand by Ukraine

Charity lunch to aid Ukraine as war enters its fourth year

The Algarve community is once again rallying to aid the Ukrainian war effort with a special fundraising event on Sunday, 15 March, at the Vale da Pinta Golf Course.

Organised by the tireless fundraising group led by Angela Broad, this event marks a continued commitment to a cause many hoped would be resolved by now. Under the umbrella of the official Ukrainian charity ORANTA, local resident Roman Grymalyuk has been instrumental in transforming 4×4 vehicles into frontline rescue ambulances. To date, he has successfully converted and delivered 28 vehicles to the front lines, with TAP Air Portugal playing a vital role by flying the drivers back from the Polish border.

The impact of these contributions is tangible and life-saving. Last October, the community hosted nine young volunteer soldiers in the Algarve, offering them a brief respite from the conflict. These soldiers, who spend their nights in bunkers ready to rescue the wounded, expressed deep gratitude for the ambulances provided by the Algarve community.

To understand the vital importance of this specific fundraising effort, one needs only to hear from those on the ground. Nazar Bartchuk, a Platoon Sergeant Major from a reconnaissance battalion, explained exactly what these donations mean to the troops:

“A military vehicle is not just a means of transportation, but a ‘workhorse’ and a guarantee of survival on the front. It is a reliable all-terrain vehicle, a pickup truck that provides mobility, ammunition delivery, evacuation of the wounded, and a quick change of positions in difficult off-road conditions, often called a true friend.”

To continue this essential work, the community is urged to attend the upcoming charity lunch, sponsored by the Pestana Hotel Group. The event promises to be a significant occasion, with the Ukrainian Ambassador and the first minister in attendance to offer their support.

Starting at 12.30 pm, guests will enjoy a three-course lunch with wine and drinks, followed by raffles and prize draws generously donated by prestigious Algarve businesses. The Poor Man’s Band will provide entertainment with timeless rock-and-roll classics.

As the organisers remind us, “Together we do make a difference”. Please lend your support to keep these ’workhorses’ running and help save lives on the front line.
