🌍 Celebrating Ukrainian Culture: A Vibrant Exhibition in Lagos! 🇺🇦
On 6 May, Lagos became a colourful canvas as it hosted a stunning exhibition showcasing the rich tapestry of Ukraine’s cultural heritage right next to the Town Hall. The characteristic Ukrainian embroidery, a hallmark of the nation’s traditional clothing and folklore, was on full display, drawing in passersby with its intricate designs and vibrant hues. More than mere artistry, this embroidery is a powerful symbol of unity and resilience, reflecting a culture that has withstood the test of time.
Roman Grymalyuk, president of ORANTA – Associação de Apoio à Comunidade Ucraniana em Portugal, spoke passionately about the exhibition. “Each stitch tells a story,” he remarked, as he invited municipal representatives to join him in a symbolic gesture of solidarity by adding another beautifully embroidered towel to the existing collection of 120, representing the vibrant Ukrainian community in Lagos.
The exhibition featured a stunning array of towels, each with its own unique symbolism. From the sober and dark tones of hardship to the bright colours of hope and celebration, these textiles encapsulate Ukraine’s journey through war and peace. The motifs embroidered onto the towels unveil the cultural richness of different Ukrainian regions, portray the diverse lives of communities abroad, celebrate family traditions, and highlight the festive moments that bring people together. This diverse collection is a heartfelt homage to the spirit of the Ukrainian people, and it won’t stop in Lagos! The exhibition will be making its way to Lisbon and beyond, reaching other European capitals to share its powerful message.
‘Towel of Unity – Towel of Victory of Ukraine!’ is more than just an art project—it began in 2024 in Tallinn, Estonia, to commemorate the Day of Defenders of Ukraine. This initiative invites Ukrainians worldwide to stitch towels together, each symbolising strength, unity, and the shared aspiration for victory. Participants from various countries, such as Estonia, Norway, Poland, France, and, of course, Portugal, are each creating their own unique pieces, which will come together to form a grand symbol of solidarity.
In Ukrainian culture, the towel is an ancient emblem representing unity, family, spirituality, and protection. Today, it has taken on new significance as it symbolises the unwavering resolve of Ukrainians everywhere in the face of adversity.
This exhibition is not just a display of art; it’s a celebration of community, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of a people who continue to believe in victory despite the challenges they face.
