Lagos Invests in Public Transport

A Massive Boost for Lagos Mobility: What the €20 Million ‘A Onda’ Investment Means for Our Community

Good news for Lagos residents! The Lagos City Council (Câmara Municipal de Lagos) has recently approved a significant investment of over 20 million euros to secure, upgrade, and operate the “A Onda” municipal public transport network for the next seven years. This long-term commitment brings a wave of fantastic benefits directly to our local community, making getting around the municipality easier, greener, and more convenient than ever before.

Here is how this exciting new phase of A Onda will benefit you:

Unprecedented Community Coverage

The transport network is undergoing a major redesign, expanding to 11 lines to ensure that over 96% of the population lives within 400 meters of a bus stop. A brand-new route, Line 11, has been created to better serve the villages of Espiche and Almádena. Additionally, the service is extending into rapidly growing urban areas that previously lacked sufficient public transport, including Atalaia, Quinta da Boavista, Porto de Mós, and Camilo/Ponta da Piedade.

Schedules Designed for Real Life

For those working in the Algarve’s bustling hospitality and restaurant sectors, commuting is about to get much easier. Acknowledging the needs of the active workforce living outside the city centre, several lines (2, 3, 4, and 6) will now feature early morning buses starting around 6:00 AM, with late-night return trips running between midnight and 1:00 AM. Furthermore, summer timetables will be extended from June through September to comfortably handle the influx of tourists.

A Greener, Cleaner Algarve

In a huge win for the environment, the new contract strongly prioritises sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Right from the start of the new contract, 65% of the A Onda fleet will consist of fully electric vehicles. The council plans to phase out the remaining older vehicles gradually, aiming to have a 100% electric bus fleet by 2030.

Free Rides for Youth and Easy Navigation

Young people are also major winners in this update. Through the “Passe Jovem,” all youth up to 23 years old can now access the A Onda network for free, even if they are not students. Finally, planning your journey is simpler than ever, as the entire A Onda network—complete with the best routes and schedules—is now fully integrated into Google Maps.
