The best photographs of this year’s edition can be seen at the old Fish Market between July 29 and August 20.
World Press Photo (WPPh) is back in Portimão between July 29 and August 20, exhibiting the winning works of the latest edition at the old Fish Market building and adjacent area. These works reveal stories of the year with a focus on the impacts of war on civilians or the climate emergency, as captured by the media throughout 2023.
The competition includes images from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America and Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Each region has four categories: Singles, Stories, Long-Term Projects, and Open Format.
The winners of the World Press Photo 2024 regional contest, including honourable mentions, are photographers from 24 countries: Argentina, Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Canada, China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Myanmar, Palestine, Peru, the Philippines, South Africa, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, the United States and Venezuela.
With the opening scheduled for 6:30 pm on July 28, the exhibition consists of images representing relevant news and moments, from the wars in Gaza and Ukraine to migration, focusing on family and dementia. These are stories told through a lens of despair and hunger, war and loss, but also perseverance and courage, love and dreams.
The 24 regional winners and the six honourable mentions were chosen by an independent jury from over 61,062 entries by 3,851 photographers from 130 countries, and four global winners were selected:
– Photo of the Year – Mohammed Salem, Reuters / “A Palestinian woman embraces the body of her niece”;
– Story of the Year – Lee-Ann Olwage, Geo / “Valim – babena”;
– Long-Term Project – Alejandro Cegarra, The New York Times / Bloomberg / “The Two Walls”;
– Open Format – Julia Kochetova / “War is Personal”.
Each of the winning photographers is intimately and personally familiar with their subjects, which helped them capture a deeper understanding of hope, empathy, and compassion.
The cream of the world’s photojournalism scene, WPPh, was founded in 1955 in the Netherlands. It is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that promotes photojournalism and freedom of information and expression. WPPh holds various events in this field, with a highlight being the most prestigious photojournalism and documentary photography contest.
It is worth noting that, at the invitation of the Cultural Association Música XXI, Portimão was part of the global WPPh itinerary continuously between 1999 and 2011. It was the first Portuguese city to exhibit the winning photos and host many of the contest’s winning photographers in several editions.
The World Press Photo 2024 exhibition itinerary includes many cities, including Amsterdam, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Brisbane, Zutphen, Knokke-Heist, Auckland, Bellinzona, Montreal, Eindhoven, São Paulo, Hamburg, Lodi, Dortmund, and Barcelona.
The images to be exhibited at the old Fish Market building and adjacent space can be viewed for free between July 29 and August 20, from 6:00 pm to midnight, organized by the Municipality of Portimão, with production by the Cultural Association Música XXI.
