The CRESC ALGARVE 2020 Operational Programme has financed the first part of the construction of the Algarve’s 3 Regional Cycle Routes, for an investment of approximately 6 million euros, with an ERDF contribution of 4.4 million euros.
The Ecovia/ Ciclovia do Litoral Sul, the Ecovia/ Ciclovia da Costa Vicentina and the Ecovia/ Ciclovia da Rota do Guadiana are the three regional cycle routes planned for the Algarve, running respectively between Odeceixe and Sagres, between Sagres and V. Real de Santo António and between Sagres and V. Real de Santo António. Real de Santo António and between this city and Alcoutim.
These regional cycle networks are part of international networks and continue an urban cycle network that crosses and connects the main regional urban centres. They are designed to accommodate daily commuting, mainly to school and work but also for shopping, leisure, and other reasons.
The Ecovia/Ciclovia do Litoral do Sul and Costa Vicentina are part of the European Cycle Route Network, the EuroVelo routes, designed for cycle tourism across the European continent, but also a good alternative for daily mobility and local leisure use.
The EuroVelo routes comprise 14 long-distance cycle routes crossing the entire European continent, with a total length of 70,000 kilometres in 42 countries. To date, 47% of the route has been completed, corresponding to 167 km of the total 358 km planned in the Algarve region. The remainder is expected to be fully implemented during the term of the current ALGARVE 2030 Regional Programme.
