Happy New Year! Enjoying your new tech purchase?
It is always exciting to explore the new features and improvements of a new device, whether it is a computer, phone, iPad or tablet.
However, as technology advances, so do the tactics of scammers. Here are some simple techniques to help you stay safe:
Emails
Check the source: always verify the email address. If it doesn’t look corporate, don’t reply. If you don’t know the sender, check with a third party first. Never forward suspicious emails, as you may infect others.
Grammatical errors: be wary of emails with grammatical mistakes or that are badly laid out. These are often signs of a scam.
Personal information: never give out any personal information, especially bank or financial details.
Phone calls
Spam indicators: many networks now indicate if a call is spam. If you answer and are asked “Is this [your name]?” never say yes. Scammers can use this recorded response to access your personal details.
Verify the caller: ask where they are calling from and the purpose of the call. If it is a corporate call, tell them you will check with the company first. If the number is unfamiliar, block it.
Stay safe and enjoy your new tech! If you have any questions or need further assistance on this or any other IT-related subject, please feel free to ask.
