Sagres Lota Interpretation Centre opens its doors to the public.
On 27 November, the Lota de Sagres Interpretation Centre – CILS opened its doors to the public on a regular basis. The centre will be open from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 13:00 and 13:30 to 16:30.
This museum facility, now open and with free admission, features a permanent exhibition on the history of fish sales in Porto da Baleeira and its protagonists, the fishing industry and its professionals, as well as environmental themes dedicated to the sea, the biodiversity of the Sagres coast, the sustainability of local marine environments and the oceans in general.
You can also visit the temporary exhibition ‘Birds of the Southwest’, which includes 29 photographs by Diniz Cortes of some of the birds that visit the municipality throughout the year.
Lota de Sagres Interpretation Centre was ceded to the town council by Docapesca through a protocol signed on 13 July 2021. Since then, the town council has promoted various initiatives and activities in this space, mainly dedicated to the seas of Sagres and their biodiversity and sustainability.
The facility has given a new lease of life to the former Lota do Porto da Baleeira building in Sagres, a space dedicated to selling fish that operated between 1973 and 2001.
With a privileged location overlooking the scenic Baleeira Cove, with the Martinhal Islets and the Atlantic in the background, this space is capable of developing heritage education activities, raising environmental awareness, publicising local heritage, providing tourist information and promoting endogenous products.
So, if you are looking for activities this holiday season, what are you waiting for?
