A New Chapter for Community Safety

Lagos Municipal Police Welcomes New Leadership

As your trusted source for news and information about the people and places in the Algarve, Tomorrow magazine is pleased to share an important update regarding our local community. On 1 June 2026, the Lagos Municipal Police officially welcomed its new command team.

Commissioner Fábio Coelho has officially taken the helm as the new Commander of the local administrative police, and he is joined by Principal Chief Hélio Jesus, who will serve as Adjunct Commander. Both leaders bring extensive experience from the Public Security Police (PSP) and have a deep, personal understanding of the Lagos community. Chief Jesus is a proud Lagos native, while Commander Coelho considers himself “adopted” by the city, having previously commanded the local Lagos PSP squad for three years starting in 2014. On this same day, a new municipal agent also initiated their duties alongside the new leadership.

During the official welcoming ceremony at the City Hall—attended by municipal leaders and representatives from the GNR, PSP, and Maritime Police—Commander Coelho expressed his dedication to the community. He emphasised that his leadership will be built on the non-negotiable values of proximity, visibility, humanism, and pedagogy. Promising to prioritise the public interest, his first step will be to actively listen to local entities, community associations, and the agents themselves to define the best policing model for Lagos.

Mayor Hugo Pereira highlighted the significant progress the Municipal Police has made since it was established in 2019 and became operational in 2021. He expressed deep gratitude for the foundational work of former commander Sérgio Remudas, who had the demanding task of building the force’s procedures from scratch. Looking to the future, the Mayor outlined ambitious plans to double or even triple the current roster of ten agents. To help achieve this, the municipality has been actively presenting the Municipal Police as a rewarding career path to high school seniors in the area.

Furthermore, the city is aggressively pursuing better, definitive facilities for the police force, which is currently housed temporarily in the old City Hall building in Praça Gil Eanes. The municipality is actively seeking to acquire the former Guarda Fiscal building in the historic Praça D´Armas—a vacant, deteriorating property—to serve as its permanent headquarters.

With fresh leadership and a strong focus on community connection, the Lagos Municipal Police is stepping into a promising new era.
