Water Saving Initiative

Alentejo and Algarve mobilise in pioneering initiatives on Water, Biodiversity and Landscape.

Exciting news from the Alentejo and Algarve regions – a pioneering initiative focused on Water, Biodiversity, and Landscape is underway. The Regional Coordination and Development Commissions (CCDR) of the Algarve and Alentejo have come together to form the Advisory Board for the ‘Integrated Territorial Instrument (ITI) Water and Landscape Ecosystems – Algarve and Alentejo’. This collaboration aims to promote sustainable management of water resources and landscape ecosystems in the region, addressing common challenges, needs, and resources.

The ITI includes an Action Plan with fourteen structuring projects focused on protecting water resources, managing risks associated with water, and increasing resilience to climate change. The Advisory Council, formed with a diverse range of organizations, will support and guide the implementation of the Action Plan to ensure alignment with environmental policies and best practices.

Applications are now open for funding from the European Regional Development Fund for the ITI Water and Landscape Ecosystems project, with a total allocation of 52.8 million euros. The initiative was presented at a recent event in Ourique, where stakeholders discussed the Action Plan and Governance Model.

This innovative initiative, with its origins in the local community and support from various organizations, demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable development.
