Portimão Goes Sports Crazy

The month of October will be characterised in Portimão by various sporting events at the highest level in the disciplines of judo, beach ultimate, BMX, tennis, race walking, adapted handball, and motorsports, which will attract thousands of athletes and spectators to the city.

The first highlight is the Senior European Judo Cup Kiyoshi Kobayashi, an international competition scheduled for 5 and 6 October at the Portimão Arena. Athletes from all over the world will participate, representing the United States of America, Argentina, Canada, France, Germany, Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, among other teams. The event will attract around 150 male and female athletes from 17 countries, is part of the sport’s world circuit and is a unique opportunity to enjoy the performance of top judoka with free entry.

One of the most important sporting events of the month will be the World Club Championships in Beach Ultimate, which will bring together around 2,600 participants from various countries to compete in Praia da Rocha between the 14th and 26th, divided into two competitions. From 14 to 19 October, the cream of the beach ultimate crop will decide the title of world champion, contested by 120 teams from 33 countries, grouped into three divisions (mixed, women’s and men’s), with a total of 2100 athletes.

In motorsport, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (AIA) will host the final round of the European Le Mans Series between 17 and 19 October. This four-hour endurance race will attract thousands of spectators. At the same time, the two international series, the Le Mans Cup and the Ligier European Series, will take place.

Also at the AIA, the Algarve Classic Festival, the largest classic car event on the Iberian Peninsula, will return between 25 and 27 October for a weekend marked by the elegance and performance of historic vehicles, which will attract many fans of cars from other eras and beyond.

Modalities for all tastes

Between 23 and 26 October, another 400 participants aged 45 and over will compete in the World Beach Ultimate Club Championships in the Great Grand Masters division.

Also noteworthy is the 6th International Adapted Handball Tournament, which will take place at the Boavista Sports Pavilion over the weekend of 18 and 19 October, organised by the Algarve Handball Association and supported by the Portimão Municipality.

The Portimão Junior Open 2024, which takes place until 6 October at the Municipal Tennis Complex and counts towards the ITF U18 ranking, will see tennis players from all over the world compete for the singles and doubles titles. Organised by the Portimão Tennis and Padel Club, the tournament has the partnership of the Portuguese Tennis Federation and the support of the Municipality of Portimão.

But October will be characterised by many other events, such as the Bentley Boys 24h, which takes place between the 4th and 6th at the AIA, the Mega Body Combat Class (on the 5th in Portimão’s riverside area, next to the old Lota), in the form of a masterclass open to the community, or the 7th and 8th rounds of the BMX Race Portuguese Cup, which will take place on the 5th and 6th at the track in Portimão’s Parque da Juventude.

Next up is the CTPP by Farmácia Arade Social Padel Tournament, scheduled for 6 to 8 October at the Portimão Municipal Tennis and Padel Complex, the Fun Cup, which will be held from 11 to 13 October at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, and the ‘Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro’ March Run, which on Sunday 13 October will run along Portimão’s riverside as part of the Algarve 24/25 regional walking and running calendar, organised by the Portimão branch of the Portuguese League Against Cancer and supported by Portimão Town Hall.

October’s sporting events will conclude with the Young Hope 2024 Tournament, which will take place from the 25th to the 27th at the Portimão Municipal Tennis and Padel Complex. This event is on the official calendar of the Portuguese Tennis Federation and is aimed at U12 and U16 boys and girls, bringing together young athletes from clubs all over the Algarve.
