Monchique Celebrates May Day with a Cultural Milestone

Celebrate Monchique’s Cultural Heritage at the XXXIV Festa do M on 1 May.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 1st, as the beautiful parish of Monchique gears up to celebrate a significant cultural milestone! This year’s XXXIV Festa do M will honour the recent inclusion of Bolo de Tacho in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This recognition, made public on April 4th by the President of Cultural Heritage, I.P., comes as a result of hard work by the Monchique Parish Council, alongside the support of the Monchique Municipality and the Culture Unit of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR), I.P. The order, issued on March 26, 2025, highlights important aspects that contribute to the appreciation of Bolo de Tacho as an essential part of the region´s cultural identity.

The criteria for this recognition emphasise the cultural and social processes that have shaped this cherished dish: its significance within the community, the way its heritage is transmitted through generations, and its relevance in today’s sustainable practices. With this inclusion, local traditions and culinary practices receive a well-deserved spotlight, fostering a deeper connection to our roots while promoting local, sustainable food systems in the Algarve.

You can join the party, starting at 3.30 pm, where you can immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Monchique! The event will feature guest speakers, including Pedro Monteiro, Vice-President of CCDR Algarve, and Paula Vieira from the Culture Unit, who will speak about the significance of this cultural heritage.

Come share in the flavours, traditions, and the spirit of Monchique—an experience not to be missed!
