Lagos Flourishes: Growing Our Urban Canopy and Saving Every Drop
As a publication deeply rooted in the Algarve community, Tomorrow loves to spotlight local initiatives that bring us together for a greener, more sustainable future. Throughout the month of March, the municipality of Lagos did exactly that by hosting an inspiring edition of Green and Water Week (Semana Verde e da Água).
Rooted in Community Action
The initiative successfully mobilised the community around environmental sustainability, particularly focusing on the town’s urban canopy. As part of a massive greening effort, 157 new trees were planted across various locations, including the City Park, Praça Gil Eanes, Bensafrim, and Odiáxere, with another 143 scheduled for planting in the coming weeks. This strategy not only replaces older trees that had to be removed for safety reasons but also greatly improves the environmental resilience of our public spaces.
What truly made this event special was the incredible local turnout. Around 1,400 students of all ages, alongside dozens of residents and staff from the Santa Casa da Misericórdia care homes, rolled up their sleeves to participate.

Every Drop Counts: Why We Can’t Let Our Guard Down
While planting trees is highly visible, the other crucial pillar of the week’s environmental awareness campaign was promoting the efficient use of water.
This brings us to a vital reminder for everyone in the Algarve: just because this winter has been wet, it doesn’t mean we should stop caring about water consumption. It is easy to see green fields and full reservoirs and think the crisis has passed, but water sustainability requires year-round, lifelong dedication. Community action is essential—encouraging responsible behaviours and a stronger connection to our territory is the only way we can truly protect our local environment.
A Collective Effort
Protecting the Algarve is a team effort. The municipality expressed deep gratitude to the incredible network of partners who made the week a success, including the Rotary Club of Lagos, Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos, Associação A Rocha, local schools, agricultural associations, and many dedicated volunteers.
Let’s carry the spirit of Green and Water Week with us into the warmer months. Keep nurturing our green spaces, and please, keep saving water!
