Portimão’s Historic Santa Catarina Garden

Portimão’s newly restored Santa Catarina Garden is inaugurated today

Just in time to celebrate National Gardens Day on Monday, the 25th of May, the Municipality of Portimão is officially inaugurating the beautifully renovated Jardim da Fortaleza de Santa Catarina in Praia da Rocha.

The opening ceremony will take place at 6 pm right next to the Santa Catarina Fortress, inviting the public to explore the revitalised grounds.

A Landmark Investment for Portimão

Remarkably, this restoration marks the very first municipal project funded entirely by the Portimão Tourist Tax, representing an investment of approximately €800,000 (plus IVA). This funding has breathed new life into the garden’s most iconic areas, including the seating space next to the fortress and the stunning western viewpoint overlooking the cliffs.

The redesign beautifully balances the old and the new. Contemporary additions, such as corten steel guards, modern public lighting, and fresh street furniture, have been seamlessly integrated with the garden’s pre-existing stone walls, stairs, and benches. The landscaping has also been thoughtfully updated with Mediterranean species that reflect the Algarve’s traditional cultural landscape, carefully preserving the space’s original character.

Celebrating Shared Memories

For successive generations of Portimonenses and visitors, the Fortress Garden has held a special place in their hearts. During the 1960s, 1970s, and beyond, it was a favourite destination for families to gather for photographs and festive moments.

To honour this rich collective memory during the construction phase, the Municipality launched the “Postais da nossa memória” (Postcards of our memory) initiative. The community was encouraged to share their old photographs and memories, which were displayed on the construction hoardings. These cherished images have since been printed as postcards and integrated into a collective panel as a living tribute to this shared legacy.

Recognised for its rich history and breathtaking views over both the beach and the Arade River, the Santa Catarina Garden is finally being returned to the community. It once again stands as a perfect space for contemplation and leisure in Praia da Rocha.
