Community Invited to Share Memories of the Jardim da Fortaleza
“Postcards of Our Memory” Brings Life to a Collective Mural with Old Photographs and Shared Memories
In the heart of Portimão, as renovations continue at the historic Jardim da Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, the local câmara is thrilled to launch a participatory photo gallery named “Postcards of Our Memory.” This collaborative initiative invites community members to contribute their cherished photographs and memories of the garden, which will be displayed on the boards surrounding the construction site.
The idea behind this project is rooted in the rich collective memory of Portimão. Particularly during the 1960s and 70s, the Jardim da Fortaleza was a favourite backdrop for family photographs across various seasons and festive occasions. Far more than just a green space, this garden has served as a site of connection, affection, and community for countless generations of locals, as well as for visitors who come to experience its charm year after year.
Submitted photographs will be printed as postcards and showcased on a dedicated mural, forming a collective tribute to a garden that has profoundly impacted the emotional identity of the Portimão community over the years.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to engage with residents, keeping them informed about the ongoing renovation and celebrating the deep emotional ties that the community has with the Jardim da Fortaleza.
In addition to the participatory mural, the construction boards will feature informative panels detailing the renovation project and highlighting the key improvements planned, accompanied by nostalgic images that evoke a sense of collective heritage.
Community members who wish to contribute are encouraged to send their photographs via private message on the municipality’s social media channels (Facebook or Instagram). They are welcome to include their name, the year of the photograph, and a brief caption if they choose. Selected images will be integrated into the mural for all to enjoy.
Through this project, the Portimão municipality aims to preserve the vibrant memories associated with this iconic space at Praia da Rocha, fostering active participation from residents in a living homage to a garden that has always been, and will continue to be, a cherished part of the community.
