Three Ways to Mark World Wetlands Day
Today, 2 February, the world turns its attention to one of our planet’s most critical yet threatened ecosystems: wetlands. For us in the Algarve, these areas—from the Ria de Alvor to the Paul de Lagos—are more than just scenic backdrops; they are vital to biodiversity, climate resilience, and our freshwater supply.
To mark this occasion, local municipalities and organisations are launching a series of initiatives that range from political alliances to family-friendly fun. Here is how the Algarve is celebrating World Wetlands Day and how you can get involved.

1. A New Chapter for the Ria de Alvor
- When: 2 February at 11:30
- Where: Antiga Lota de Alvor
Perhaps the most significant institutional move today is the renewal of a vital partnership. The municipalities of Lagos and Portimão are coming together at the Antiga Lota de Alvor to sign a Letter of Intent aimed at reactivating the Association of Municipalities of Ria de Alvor.
Originally created in 2005 to protect this shared territory, the association’s operations had been interrupted due to various contingencies. Today’s signing signals a fresh start and a “strategic vision” for joint management. The goal is to balance economic development with ecological conservation, ensuring that the unique identity of the Ria is preserved for future generations.
2. Citizen Science at Lagos Zoo (50% Off!)
- When: 2 February
- Where: Lagos Zoo
For families looking for a hands-on way to celebrate, Lagos Zoo has launched an ambitious two-year campaign titled “Wetlands for Life” (2026–2027) in partnership with the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. The zoo is transforming visitors into “citizen scientists” by encouraging the use of the iNaturalist app, which allows users to upload photos of plants and insects to a global scientific database.
To kick off this initiative, the zoo is offering a 50% discount on entry fees today to visitors with the iNaturalist app installed on their phones. It is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a day out while teaching children that they can actively help protect biodiversity.

3. Deep Dive Discussion at the Museum
- When: 5 February at 6 pm
- Where: Auditório dos Paços do Concelho Séc. XXI, Lagos
If you prefer an intellectual deep dive into the subject, the Museum of Lagos is hosting a conversation titled “The Sea-Land Interface in Planetary Sustainability” later this week.
The session will feature experts, including geographer Ana Ramos Pereira, professor Rui Santos, and documentary producer Gertrudes Marçal. The discussion will use the documentary series O Planeta Vivo as a jumping-off point to analyse why wetlands are among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth and how traditional knowledge can help preserve them.
This event is particularly relevant for Lagos residents, as it highlights Paul de Lagos, a wetland of high environmental value located at the end of the Bensafrim stream.
- Admission: Free, but registration is mandatory.
Whether you are snapping scientific photos at the zoo or exploring the Ria, take a moment today to appreciate the water and wildlife that make the Algarve so special. Happy World Wetlands Day!
