2025/2026 Sports Season Kicks Off in Portimão on September 15
Registrations open from September 3
Starting September 15, the Municipality of Portimão launches its wide-ranging 2025/2026 sports season, offering residents the chance to engage in 25 different activities. From maintenance and adapted gymnastics to tennis, swimming, water aerobics, ballet, contemporary dance, cardio fit, and total fit, there’s a program for everyone. Three flagship municipal projects – Exercise & Health, Diabetes in Motion, and Portimão Rosa – will also continue, supporting the community’s special health and fitness needs.
With this comprehensive program, Portimão aims to promote healthy lifestyles through regular physical activity, encouraging residents of all ages to take part in tailored classes and programs.
Activities begin on September 15 across several venues: the Portimão Gymnasium Pavilion, Boavista Sports Hall, and the Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande Sports Complexes. Registrations open September 3, and must be completed at the facility offering the desired activity. Participants should present a valid Citizen Card or ID card, and in the latter case, their taxpayer number.
Exercise & Health Program
Designed for residents aged 55+, and run in collaboration with local institutions, this program takes place at the Portimão Gymnasium Pavilion and Boavista Sports Hall. It includes adapted gymnastics and fitness, walking and running sessions, and the much-loved Senior Olympics among other community activities.
Portimão Gym
Targeting those 16 and over, Portimão Gym mirrors popular gym-style classes such as yoga, pilates, zumba, localized workouts, cardio fit, and total fit. Classes will run at the Portimão Gymnasium Pavilion and Boavista Sports Hall.
A special feature is the inclusion of fitness activities for children aged 4–12, such as pop dance and dance kids sessions, available at the same venues.
Ballet, Contemporary Dance & Pop Dance
The Municipal Dance School will be based at the Portimão Gymnasium Pavilion, offering ballet, contemporary dance, and pop dance classes.
- Ballet classes are divided into categories: Children’s Ballet (ages 5+), Beginner Ballet (9+), and Intermediate Ballet (12+), with multiple schedule options.
- Contemporary dance runs on Mondays and Wednesdays, with beginner and advanced groups for participants aged 10+.
Swimming, Water Aerobics, Tennis & More
At the Mexilhoeira Grande Sports Complex, set in a peaceful environment, residents can enjoy swimming, water aerobics, body & mind, and pilates, with hydrotherapy available as a therapeutic option.
The swimming school also offers a special Parent & Child class on Saturday mornings, open to children from age 3.
Meanwhile, the Alvor Sports Complex provides:
- A six-lane indoor pool
- Two synthetic tennis courts
- A multipurpose sports area
- An outdoor fitness workout park
Participants may also book tennis courts for recreational use with friends or family. The pool is open for free swim sessions and also hosts group classes in swimming and water aerobics.
