BiblioÁgua – Education through Literature

Faro Municipal Library promotes environmental education through literature

The Faro Municipal Library, in collaboration with Águas do Algarve, carried out the BiblioÁgua project throughout the 2024/2025 academic year—an initiative that combines literature with environmental education, offering an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to schools across the municipality.

The project was further enriched by the involvement of author Susana Jorge and her book Eu sou vida (“I Am Life”).

Between October 2024 and May 2025, 16 sessions were held with primary and one pre-school group, using reading mediation, interactive activities, and creative reflection on the theme of water.

The initiative received high praise from participating schools, which commended the seamless integration of environmental and literary content and highlighted the enthusiasm shown by the children throughout the project.

The project culminated in a final exhibition hosted at the Faro Municipal Library from 26 to 31 May 2025, showcasing 12 creative works produced by the participating classes. Class 2.º C from Ria Formosa Primary School received the highest number of public votes and was awarded the honour of hoisting the Blue Flag at Faro Beach on 13 June, as well as presenting a theatrical performance focused on environmental protection.

As part of the “Tales Shared, Smiles Exchanged” initiative, the Clube da Agulha (Needle Club) also contributed to the project by producing 15 reusable fabric bags and 15 gloves. These were developed as support materials for environmental education activities on the beach, reinforcing the sustainability message among beachgoers in Faro.

BiblioÁgua exemplifies participatory, intergenerational education, uniting diverse fields for environmental sustainability, with success shown by school engagement, student enthusiasm, and partner involvement.
