Lagos Invests in Primary Healthcare

The Câmara Municipal de Lagos has approved a tender for the construction of the Lagos High-Resolution Outpatient Unit.

This new two-storey, standalone building will expand the existing Lagos Health Centre, increasing the range of primary healthcare services available to residents.

Designed by the Ministry of Health through its regional services, the facility will include features such as a Day Hospital, Specialised Outpatient Consultations, Speciality Examinations and Treatments, Ambulatory Surgery, Paediatrics, an Integrated Diagnostic Centre, Oral Health / Dentistry, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, and a University Health Centre. In addition to healthcare areas, the facility will feature typical waiting, administrative, logistics, and technical zones, along with outdoor spaces, access routes, and parking facilities.

Following the transfer of responsibilities to local authorities regarding buildings, the municipality is tasked with overseeing the construction. However, the management and future operation of this new primary healthcare facility will remain the responsibility of the Ministry of Health.

This initiative, part of the health sector’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, represents an investment of €10 million (specifically €10,475,000), with approximately half of this amount co-financed by the PRR. Consequently, the municipality has used its own funds to initiate the tender process, with hopes of being reimbursed later on.

It is worth noting that the local authority is currently engaged in several strategic interventions across various sectors. This includes housing projects valued at €48 million, which will provide a total of 267 homes as part of the Local Housing Strategy; educational improvements at the Escola Básica 2.3 das Naus, involving an investment of €11.9 million; water efficiency initiatives costing €10.9 million for ongoing, upcoming, and tendered projects; and business accommodation efforts, which are being executed at a cost of €4.6 million.

This investment in healthcare and other sectors reflects the municipality’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents in Lagos.
