Lagos Beaches: Blue Flag Season

Flags Raised on Lagos Beaches: Blue Flag Season Launches with a Focus on Nature Restoration

Lagos officially raised the Blue Flags on its beaches yesterday, marking the start of the environmental awareness campaign “Lagos Riding the Summer Wave 2025.” This year’s initiative focuses on the theme “Nature Recovers Where It Is Cared For,” aligning with the national challenge set by the Blue Flag Association for Environmental Education (ABAAE) to spotlight “Nature Restoration.”

Currently, Lagos boasts four Blue Flag distinctions—three bathing zones and the Marina. Additionally, four beaches hold the “Accessible Beach” label. Yesterday, flags were hoisted at Meia Praia, Porto de Mós, and Praia da Luz, each recognized with Blue Flag, Accessible Beach, Gold Quality, and Quality Coast certifications. Praia da Batata, designated as an Accessible Beach, also raised its flag, reinforcing Lagos’ commitment to inclusive and sustainable beach management.

Moreover, this moment marked not only the beginning of the official bathing season—which runs from June 1 to September 30—but also the launch of a two-month campaign designed to educate and engage the public on key environmental issues. Activities will rotate across five beaches: D. Ana, Meia Praia, Praia da Luz, Batata, and Porto de Mós.

Visitors summer avtivities

Throughout the summer, visitors will be invited to take part in a wide range of recreational, educational, and awareness-raising activities. These are organized by the municipality in collaboration with various partner organizations and sponsored by Unilever. Topics will include:

  • Energy & Climate Change
  • Water, Natural Resources & Risk Management
  • Waste & Marine Pollution
  • Biodiversity & Nature Restoration
  • Healthy Eating & Well-Being

Marine life ecosystems

One standout activity, led by SOMAR, will simulate marine life ecosystems with and without human interference. This interactive experience is designed to spark curiosity among children and adults alike, while fostering greater awareness of the collective responsibility to reduce human impact on nature.

Safety, health and well-being

In addition to its strong environmental initiatives, Lagos is stepping up efforts to protect beachgoers by providing daily lifeguard coverage and medical support across its coastline. These services are available throughout the bathing season, reinforcing the city’s commitment to public health and safety.

Specifically, two dedicated nursing stations will operate during the summer months: one at Praia do Porto de Mós, overseen by a private concessionaire in collaboration with the Portuguese Red Cross, and another at Praia da Luz, maintained jointly by the Lagos municipality and the Local Health Unit (ULS).

Moreover, these medical units are equipped to deliver immediate first aid and basic nursing care. Whether treating sunstroke, low blood pressure, weever fish stings, or minor abrasions, staff provide swift and effective intervention directly on-site—minimizing risks and ensuring a prompt response to common beach-related incidents.

Ultimately, Lagos is paving the way for a summer that is not only unforgettable but also safe, inclusive, informative, and environmentally responsible.
