Portimão Relaunches “Exercise and Health,” “Diabetes in Motion,” and “Portimão Rosa” to Promote Sports for All
The municipal programs “Diabetes in Motion,” “Exercise and Health,” and “Portimão Rosa” return this September and October with new sessions, reaffirming Portimão’s commitment to making sports and physical activity accessible to everyone.
These initiatives are designed for residents with different needs — from those aged 55 and over, to individuals diagnosed with diabetes, breast cancer, or colorectal cancer.
Through these programs, the Municipality of Portimão continues to champion regular, adapted exercise as a way to democratize access to sports and encourage healthy lifestyles across the community.
“Exercise and Health” at Gimnodesportivo and Boavista Pavilions
Targeted at residents aged 55 and older, “Exercise and Health” promotes regular physical activity in partnership with local institutions. Sessions take place at the Boavista Sports Pavilion and the Portimão Gimnodesportivo, featuring gymnastics, adapted fitness, walking, and running.
The program also includes the popular “Senior Olympics” and social activities, as well as awareness-raising sessions on health topics particularly relevant to this age group.
Multiple schedules are available, and registration is already open at both sports venues.
“Diabetes in Motion” Kicks Off October 1
The community program “Diabetes in Motion Portimão” resumes in October, designed specifically for people with type 2 diabetes. Implemented through a partnership between the Municipality of Portimão and the Algarve Local Health Unit (ULS Algarve), the project runs until June 2026.
Sessions are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at Boavista Sports Pavilion and Portimão Gimnodesportivo, led by exercise professionals and nurses. Participation is free but requires referral from doctors or nurses at local health centers and hospitals under ULS Algarve.
Part of the National Health Plan 2030, “Diabetes in Motion” is overseen by the Directorate-General of Health through the National Physical Activity and National Diabetes Programs. Last season in Portimão, the initiative hosted 100 exercise sessions, 14 health education sessions, and celebrated seven health- and sustainability-related events.
“Portimão Rosa” Offers Supervised Exercise for Cancer Patients
Following the success of its first edition, “Portimão Rosa” returns this October. The program provides supervised physical activity for people diagnosed with breast or colorectal cancer, whether in treatment or post-treatment.
Its main goal is to improve physical and functional fitness, often compromised by cancer treatments. The program addresses side effects such as fatigue, reduced muscle strength, limited mobility, changes in body composition, bone density loss, and decreased aerobic capacity.
Each participant undergoes a prior assessment to create a tailored exercise plan, considering factors such as cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength. Sessions will take place at Boavista Sports Pavilion and Portimão Gimnodesportivo, starting after the registration and evaluation phase — already underway.
