Portimão Establishes Cooperation Agreement with Turkish Municipality of Bayraklı for Environmental Best Practices
A delegation from Portimão travelled to the Turkish city of Bayraklı last week to sign a friendship and cooperation agreement between the two municipalities as part of the Town Twinning between Turkey and EU (Twinning for a Green Future) program.
The agreement was signed on November 22 by the Vice-President of Portimão Municipality, Teresa Mendes, and the Mayor of the host municipality, İrfan Önal.
To strengthen ties, the two cities are focusing on activities and exchanges that promote shared growth in various fields and skills.
One active example is the ongoing development of a biomaterial kit by their respective school communities.
The newly signed agreement aims to foster the exchange of experiences and implement initiatives that modernize services in both cities. Moreover, by focusing on shared best practices, the collaboration seeks to address climate and environmental challenges, thereby paving the way for a green transition.
Supporting Sustainability
In addition, the biomaterial kit empowers teachers and students with diverse resources, such as tools, instruments, ingredients, and recipes. Through these materials, users are inspired to embrace creativity and innovation in sustainability, circular economy, nature-positive practices, environmental protection, co-creation, bio design, and biomaterials. As a result, this initiative promotes meaningful engagement in addressing environmental challenges.
This pilot project, funded with 115.955,52€, involved a series of pedagogical and experimental activities over one year. Each session engaged around 100 students in Portimão, divided between Bemposta Basic and Secondary School and Poeta António Aleixo Secondary School, as well as an equal number of students from educational institutions in Bayraklı.
The team showcased the biomaterial kit on November 28 at Bemposta Basic and Secondary School. Portimão’s Mayor, Álvaro Bila, actively participated in the event, alongside project teams from the Bemposta School Group and the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Higher Institute, who have been integral to the development process.
