Expansion and Renovation in Lagos

Expansion of the Former Conde de Ferreira School and Renovation of Praça D’Armas Underway

The municipality has approved the launch of a public tender for the redevelopment and expansion of the former Conde de Ferreira School building, which currently houses the Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1.º de Maio. In parallel, the project also includes the urban renewal of the iconic Praça D’Armas.

This decision marks the culmination of a multi-stage process that began with the development of a Preliminary Program by municipal services. The plan then progressed to an Execution Project and underwent a mandatory legal review due to the estimated value of the works. Now, the city council is moving forward with the tender process for the construction phase.

With a base budget of €1.25 million and an expected completion time of 510 days, the project will see the extension of the century-old building. A new annex will be constructed on the west side, featuring five classrooms and two restroom facilities. This expansion aims to significantly improve conditions for the Philharmonic Society, enabling it to continue its mission in musical education and cultural engagement.

Simultaneously, the exterior will undergo a comprehensive transformation as part of the Praça D’Armas redesign. The plan includes replacing outdated infrastructure and establishing a pedestrian-friendly zone, while restricting vehicle traffic on the northern and eastern streets. Ultimately, this investment seeks to enhance a key area that connects the city’s historic center with its growing urban outskirts—reinforcing its role as a vital pedestrian corridor.
