Jessie J can’t put a ‘price tag’ on the Pine Cliffs Gala
Jessie J is widely recognised as possessing one of the most formidable voices in the music business. Yet, when she took to the stage at the prestigious Pine Cliffs Summer Gala on 31 July, it wasn’t just her vocal gymnastics that captivated the crowd. Instead, what truly took me by surprise was her sharp, self-deprecating wit, her genuine connection with the audience, and a series of moving life affirmations that, at times, made the concert feel wonderfully like a group therapy session.
The Algarve’s Most Challenging Gig
Having attended a few of the Pine Cliffs Summer Galas over the years, I have often noted that for any performer, this is a notoriously difficult gig. The past roster of legends – including Ronan Keating, Gloria Gaynor, UB40 and Sir Tom Jones – have all faced the unique layout of the venue. On one hand, you are performing to an elite, seated audience in the dining area who have paid around €600 for a sumptuous dinner and are, quite frankly, often more engrossed in the food and wine than the stage. On the other hand, you have the die-hard fans who have paid a premium to be right at the front barrier, bursting with energy. Then there is the third tier – where I found myself – standing on a grassy hill, squinting over the heads of the dining elite.
Jessie J handled this disjointed setup with absolute aplomb. As she humorously observed to the crowd, “It’s like a mix of a wedding, a garden party and a rave at the back!” Admitting she felt fantastic after a rare ten hours of sleep away from her three-year-old son, she playfully warned the dining crowd not to fake knowing the lyrics. She made me laugh when she told them she would save her massive hit ‘Price Tag’ for the very end, as it was likely the only song they actually knew – joking that it was her only leverage to keep them from leaving early!
Raw Talent, Stripped Back
Opting for a stripped-back, acoustic set, the British singer-songwriter let her extraordinary vocal ability do all the heavy lifting. There were no flashy production elements, backing tracks, or complex choreography to hide behind, and at times she wrestled with a faulty fan that she asked one of the crew to come and adjust, as it was blowing up her skirt! Indeed, the most elaborate aspect of her presentation was her stunning dress, prompting her to quip, “I’m normally more of a trouser suit sort of girl.” Her frequent pauses to chat and banter directly with individual audience members brought an unexpected warmth and intimacy to the massive gala, effortlessly winning over anyone who had previously been on the fence.
The setlist was a masterclass in vocal control and emotional depth, featuring stunning renditions of ‘Who You Are’, ‘Me, Myself and I’, ‘LaserLight’, and ‘Living My Best Life’ – the latter of which she described as one of her personal favourites to perform. Predictably, one of the loudest, most electric moments of the night arrived with ‘Price Tag’, as the entire venue united for an enthusiastic, full-throated sing-along of the iconic chorus.
Music as Therapy and Triumph
During the performance, she also spoke with deep, moving candour about her breast cancer diagnosis. Her announcement that she is now officially cancer-free was met with a roar of applause and a standing ovation from the adoring crowd. Reflecting on her journey, she shared that there is no ‘correct’ or prescribed way to navigate a cancer diagnosis; for her, the path forward was writing and recording an album. This poignant revelation made her final choice of encore – Frank Sinatra’s classic ‘My Way’ – all the more fitting.
As she shared the intimate stories behind her songs, which frequently touch on themes of resilience, vulnerability, self-empowerment, and embracing our flaws, the boundary between artist and audience seemed to dissolve entirely. She became a collective therapist for the night, urging us to remain grounded in the present moment and to wake up each morning offering ourselves unconditional love. At one point, she paused the music completely and looked up, pleading with the entire crowd, “Look at that moon.”
It was a magical night under the Algarve sky, which climaxed in a fabulous firework display, and I have to thank Pine Cliffs for livening up my summer by continuing to bring such acclaimed acts to the Algarve. I walked away from the Pine Cliffs, feeling an even deeper admiration and love for Jessie J. Her extraordinary journey through music, healing and life remains a true inspiration.
