How the Abba Honeys Became the Dancing Queens of Albufeira
Get ready to say “Thank You for the Music!” If you’ve been out and about in Albufeira recently, you might have caught the infectious energy of the Abba Honeys. This incredible tribute act is taking the Algarve by storm with their dazzling harmonies, original costumes, and unforgettable performances. But how did this duo come to be? Well, Mamma Mia, it’s quite a story!
Taking a Chance on Karaoke
Sharon and Joana’s partnership started with a little serendipity. Originally from Wales, Sharon had initially envisioned retiring in Spain. However, a less-than-welcoming atmosphere sent her looking elsewhere, and luckily for us, she found her perfect fit in the warmth of the Portuguese people. Joana, on the other hand, is a born-and-bred Portimão local who has no desire to travel, happily preferring the comfort of her own bed surrounded by her three cats.
The two crossed paths at a local bar’s karaoke night. They decided to Take a Chance on a song together, discovering an instant connection over their shared love for ABBA. What started as a lighthearted 30-minute duet at a 60th birthday party quickly blossomed into an unexpected musical partnership.
Knowing Me, Knowing You (and Overcoming Stage Fright)
Stepping into the spotlight was a major surprise for Sharon’s friends and family—and perhaps most of all for Sharon herself, who is naturally shy and reserved. “Never in a million years did I think I’d be doing this,” she laughs.
Having never performed in public before, Sharon dedicated herself to singing lessons to prepare. “During those first few performances, I thought I was going to have a heart attack,” Sharon confessed, recalling how she could barely breathe. But suddenly, something shifted, and her confidence kicked in. With the support of her family, Joana’s encouragement, and some fabulous costumes that she makes herself with a little help from her mum, Sharon realised she was living a lifelong dream she didn’t even know she had.

Not in it for the Money, Money, Money
While Sharon found her voice a bit later in life, Joana has a rich musical background. Classically trained as a soprano with Portimão’s Adágio Choir, she realised her destiny for performance during a powerful solo sung in German at a packed pipe organ festival. She’s also a master of accents—effortlessly switching between British and American tones—which landed her the lead role in a local Sister Act production that many said rivalled professional companies!
Joana has showcased her dynamic stage presence extensively with the Algarvean Theatre, but if you’re wondering if she’ll ever turn her incredible voice into a full-time gig, the answer is no. She loves her day job as a veterinary nurse far too much to leave it behind. Still, she dreams of one day stepping into iconic musical roles in shows like Grease, Les Misérables, or Wicked.
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! A Show in Albufeira
For now, this unlikely duo are officially the dancing and singing Queens of Albufeira. If you want to see them in action, you can catch the Abba Honeys doing their thing at Ancora on Thursdays and Saturdays, or at the Coyote Bar on Fridays.
What’s next for the Honeys? They are already planning a rock tribute to girl power. Mamma Mia, now that would be something to look forward to!
