Lagos câmara has organised an awareness-raising campaign to control invasive plants in the region.
On 6 and 7 May, the municipality is organising an awareness-raising and training event on invasive alien species, with the aim of alerting people to their impacts and training the community to help control them. The initiative is part of Invasive Species Week 2025, which is taking place simultaneously in Portugal and Spain between 3 and 11 May.
Invasive species represent one of the main threats to global biodiversity and are also responsible for significant environmental and socio-economic damage. In the municipality of Lagos, the presence of species such as pampas grass, beach weeds, acacias and reeds has prompted action from the municipality and partner organisations.
The event is aimed at municipal technicians, green space service operators, parish councils, gardening companies, the school community, and the general public. Registration is open until 5 May via an online form.
On 6 May, at 9.30 am, a theoretical session will take place in the Auditorium of the Paços do Concelho Séc. XXI, with interventions from representatives of the municipality, the Portuguese Environment Agency, the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, WWF Portugal, the University of the Algarve and other experts in the field. In the afternoon, between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, a technical visit will take place to map invasive plants in various areas of the municipality, departing from the car park.
