Loulé’s Toy Health Centre Helps Kids Overcome Fear of Doctors
For many children, a trip to the doctor can be a terrifying experience. However, a recent heartwarming initiative in the Algarve is working to change that narrative. Between May 20 and 22, 2026, 800 first-grade students from Loulé participated in the “Centro de Saúde das Brincadeiras” (Toy Health Centre). This joint initiative between the Municipality of Loulé and the Local Health Unit of the Algarve was specifically designed to help the youngest members of our community deconstruct their negative ideas about health services and lose their fear of “white coat doctors,” stethoscopes, and injection needles.
Held at the old Carnival warehouse, the educational visit allowed children to bring their own favourite toys and dolls to be “consulted” and “treated” in a relaxed, fun environment. The children engaged in symbolic play alongside real health technicians, learning about the roles of different professionals across various services, including Nursing, Oral Hygiene, Physiotherapy, Radiology, Speech Therapy, and Psychology.

To ensure the experience was as joyous as possible, Clown Salsinha from the charity Operação Nariz Vermelho served as the children’s guide, distributing “injections of joy” to help reduce any lingering anxiety about hospitals or medical appointments. The event also saw fantastic community support, featuring collaborations with local health professionals, the Loulé Sapadores Firefighters, the GNR, and various volunteers.
The initiative reinforces the crucial role of play in the emotional and cognitive development of young people. Telmo Pinto, the Mayor of Loulé, highlighted the long-term benefits of the project, stating: “This action reflects the continuous commitment of the Municipality to the promotion of health and well-being from childhood. We want children to grow up healthy, without fears, and to come to the Health Centre to take care of their body and mind, without fears”.
By transforming a potentially scary medical visit into a positive and educational adventure, Loulé is paving the way for a healthier, happier generation here in the Algarve.
