The Portuguese Diaspora: Sounds of the Old and New World

Beyond caravels and the Cape of Good Hope, Portugal’s relationship with the wider world is rooted in a profound desire for change and discovery. The Portuguese expansion of the 15th century marked the beginning of a unique process of cultural exchange and blending, shaping musical traditions both at home and in the lands touched by the Age of Discoveries. This cultural interweaving influenced performance practices, harmonic languages, and musical expression across continents, leaving a lasting imprint on Portugal’s collective identity.

The Diaspora Project brings together three landmark works – Diaspora.pt (2008), Terra (2011), and Península (2012) – exploring a vast array of musical genres and forms from five continents, spanning both past and present. The project experiments with new interpretive approaches to popular and classical repertoires from the 16th to the 20th centuries, traversing Iberian villancicos, fado, Afro-Brazilian chorinhos, African mornas, and traditional songs from Timor, Macau, India, Brazil, and Japan.

This is an immersive journey through time and space: a sonic exploration of travel, migration, pilgrimage, land, water, saudade, and the echoes of what remains today after centuries of encounters.

The concert features a special performance by the Grupo Coral de Lagos, adding a vibrant communal voice to this celebration of global Portuguese heritage.
