Volta ao Algarve sets the tone for Portimão’s sporting February

Portimão is preparing for a sport-packed February, highlighted by the start of the 2nd stage of the 52nd Volta ao Algarve Cycling Race, one of the most high-profile events on Portugal’s national sporting calendar. The stage will start on 19 February from the Riverside Area (Zona Ribeirinha).

The start of the 2nd stage will be preceded by several activities open to the public. Team arrivals are scheduled between 10:30 and 11:00, followed by the official presentation of the riders from 11:00 to 12:50.
The ceremonial ribbon-cutting will take place at 12:40, with the official start set for 12:50, heading towards Fóia, in the Monchique Mountains, marking the first summit finish of the 2026 edition.

The race will feature UAE Team Emirates-XRG, the team that topped the UCI rankings in 2025, bringing to the Algarve Portuguese riders João Almeida, António Morgado, and brothers Rui and Ivo Oliveira.

With free admission, the event is expected to attract thousands of spectators to Portimão’s Riverside Area, fostering close interaction between athletes, teams and the public.

Youth cycling opens February’s sporting agenda

February’s sporting calendar in Portimão begins with a strong focus on youth development and the promotion of cycling at grassroots level.
On 1 February, the 2nd Inter-Schools MTB Meeting will take place, an initiative dedicated to social interaction, sports practice and cycling development in an educational context. Organised by TIC TAC Associação Desportiva, the event involves schools, athletes and families, promoting values such as teamwork and healthy, active lifestyles from an early age.

On 7 February, at 9:00, the Algarve Regional Youth XCO Schools Meeting will be held at the TIC TAC Kids Camp, as part of the Algarve Cycling Association’s official calendar.
The event brings together young riders from schools across the Algarve and Lower Alentejo, reinforcing Portimão’s role as a hub for youth cycling development.

Registrations for both events are available through the Portuguese Cycling Federation HERE.

International motorsport at the Algarve circuit

Beyond cycling, February once again places Portimão at the centre of motorsport, with the Algarve International Circuit hosting several international competitions.
On 7 and 8 February, the 6 Hours of Portimão endurance race will take place, featuring GT and Prototype categories as part of the Sports Prototype Winter Series and Formula Winter Series. From 13 to 15 February, the circuit hosts the Ultimate Cup Winter Series, a pre-season competition, followed by the F4 Spain Winter Championship from 20 to 22 February, dedicated to the development of young Formula 4 drivers.

Inclusive physical activity and health promotion

As part of its municipal strategy to promote health and adapted physical activity, the Municipality of Portimão will hold an open class of the “Portimão Rosa” programme on 7 February at 9:30, at the Portimão Sports Pavilion.
Aimed at people with oncological diseases—particularly breast or colorectal cancer patients in treatment or post-treatment—the programme is based on supervised and individualised physical exercise, defined after a functional assessment.

“Portimão Rosa” contributes to improved physical fitness, autonomy and quality of life, integrating physical activity as a key complement in recovery and overall well-being.

Gymnastics and fitness with a community focus

The monthly programme also includes federated events and initiatives promoting sports participation. The Portimão Trampoline Open, from 14 to 16 February at Portimão Arena, will bring together athletes from several national clubs in Trampoline and Tumbling disciplines. Admission is free.
On 28 February, the Epic Fitness Day at the Boavista Sports Pavilion will promote physical activity and well-being within the community through group classes and workshops.

BMX closes the monthly programme

Closing the month, the Bicross track at Parque da Juventude will host the 1st and 2nd rounds of the Portuguese BMX Race Cup on 28 February and 1 March. The event is organised by the Portuguese Cycling Federation, in collaboration with the Portimão Bicross Club and with the support of the Municipality.

With this programme, Portimão strengthens its position as an active destination capable of hosting large-scale sporting events, combining high-level competition with community-focused initiatives throughout the year.
