Mini Wine Fair

Madame Wineshop & Bar (Lagos) will host a focused mini wine fair dedicated exclusively to rosé wines from Portugal, Italy, and France. Together with three winemakers deeply engaged in the European wine community, the event aims to challenge long-held clichés and showcase the expressive potential of a category that remains widely misunderstood.

While this style is still commonly associated with summer, simplicity, stylistic sameness, and lightness, a new generation of European producers is crafting rosé wines with depth, structure, identity of place, and gastronomic relevance. This event seeks to position the pink colour as a serious contender in contemporary wine culture.

We believe that artisanal, low-intervention producers are best positioned to redefine “pink” and challenge the modern construct shaped in Provence in the 1980s—characterised by early picking, direct pressing, lab-selected yeasts, temperature control, and heavy filtering and fining, all of which standardised profiles and reduced complexity.

The Algarve may seem like an unexpected stage for this conversation, but it is also one of the Portuguese regions that receives the highest numbers of year-round international travellers — most of them unfamiliar with Portuguese wine history and geography. That lack of familiarity opens the door to discovering styles that are rarely exported and thus seldom represented abroad, such as chilled light reds, traditional palhetes, and artisanal rosés (beyond the well-known Mateus Rosé).

Drawing on years of feedback from wine professionals and countless conversations with customers—many of whom routinely dismiss rosé as insufficiently interesting—we felt the need to bring this conversation to Portugal and raise awareness of the persistent bias rosé continues to face. The organisers are committed to a meaningful, informed wine culture—one that empowers both the industry and consumers, and fosters knowledge not only from Portugal but also from the world’s leading wine regions.

“We want to open space for a conversation that hasn’t fully happened in Portugal,” says Diane, co-owner of Madame Wineshop. “Rosé deserves to be evaluated with the same attention and curiosity we apply to whites and reds. The wines we’ll pour show just how layered and expressive this colour can be.”

The Tasting

The event features a curated selection from three seasoned, low-intervention winemakers:

·       Filippo Pozzi (Atlasland — Algarve/Aljezur)

·       Luís Gil (Marinho — Lisboa/Óbidos)

·       Tobias Steber (Pranzegg — Alto Adige/Bolzano)

Each winemaker will present their own rosés as well as rosés from colleagues they consider reference points, illustrating the versatility, ageing potential, and terroir-driven character increasingly associated with the category.
